Author Bio: Jessica Minyard

Jessica wrote and illustrated her first story in the fourth grade. “The Dragon of Grindley Grun” was about an evil wizard, a princess, and a dragon who was actually a prince. She likes to think her writing has evolved since that very first story, even though she still writes about magic and evil wizards...sometimes.  She likes to sing loudly and dance on occasion without being particularly talented at either. Her interests include reading, writing, procrastinating, animal advocacy, musicals, accessories, memes, Harry Potter, and sweet tea.  Jessica lives in Kentucky with a spoiled pitbull.

And now for my review of...

My rating: 4.3 out of 5 stars

Fave quote'Unpredictable. Unfathomable in its destruction. Virtually unheard of.

There are only a few known cases of the Maker's fever in hundreds of years of our race. The same magic that prolongs my meager life, destroyed it. Normally, extreme fatigue or unconsciousness will occur before someone reaches the point I did. But I went beyond the reach of my powers, further than anyone I've ever known. Reaching for energy that was not there.

So now, I lie dying.'

My thoughts on the book:

Multi-layered & utterly riveting, Stones and Fingers Bones is a winner from the get-go.

I have a deep, enduring love for books with amazing titles. And Stones and Fingers Bones is no exception - whether it's effect of the use of rhyme, or the wickedly magical feeling the words evoke, the title grabs your attention and sets the stage.

Characters evolve and struggle with their fates.

Many of the characters in Stones and Finger Bones have a real sense of depth. I especially liked how characters were re-evaluated by other characters - for example, in the case of Aurelia and Vivaine:
'"You killed a man."
Vivaine tossed her head. "A scoundrel. Thief. No one will miss him. He was nobody."
Aurelia stared at her, as if seeing the woman for the first time: sharp angular features, a cruel twist to her mouth, haughty eyes.
"Nobody cares, Aurelia," Vivaine said.
"I care."
That man was somebody to someone. A son, brother, maybe a husband and father. Somebody loved him.
Aurelia felt something snap.'
All in all Stones and Finger Bones was a brilliant tale of magic and mayhem.
