I was recommend this book by the wonderful Library Luv - and knowing Library Luv's great taste in books, I had high hopes for Elise Kova's Air Awakens.

 But before I let you guys know what I thought, here's a little about the book...

Elise Kova's Air Awakens is a fantasy story that balances reality and fiction.

A truly well-crafted fantasy world should be able to maintain a perfect balance between reality and fiction - giving readers enough glimpses of reality to get them to believe in this new world, whilst also giving the story enough fiction magic to transport them there.

Air Awakens impressed me with its ability to keep me in the world Elise Kova created. I never felt like concepts were over-explained, or dumbed down for me. I felt like, as a reader, I was being treated like an equal - a newcomer, but an equal. The author was treating me to a new experience without making me feel like I needed to go through 12 chapters of backstory to understand everything.

And that is, for me, the key to fantasy. Transport a reader to a new world and keep them there. Don't alienate them, but invite them by giving them tantalising peeks into the story's foundations. Make the experience magical for them!

It also features a really good-looking guy.

No...no, I am not shallow! But I appreciate a hot male character as much as the next female reader, and Elise Kova's prince is swoon-worthy to the max. I mean, the guy is literally and figuratively hot (all fire puns intended!) so what's not to love?!

Vhalla is a spirited heroine whom you cannot help but love.

I have read many books, and let me tell you, I have not loved every heroine I have come across. But Vhalla endeared herself to me from the moment I met her - the perfect mixture of weakness and bravery, a flawed yet strong character whose trials were relatable despite their fictional nature. 

Following Vhalla's journey in Air Awakens was enjoyable every step of the way and I am honestly extremely excited for what's to come next in the series!

Jane Unwrapped by Leah & Kate Rooper ~ Review, Interview + Giveaway

Let me introduce you to a book you'll be dying to read...

As many of you may be aware, I simply adore all things mythology - especially ancient Egyptian mythology. 

So when I was given the opportunity to read & review Jane Unwrapped by Leah and Kate Rooper I just knew that it was the kind of book that I would fall instantly in love with. And I was right! Two pages in and I was already tuning out the outside world, perfectly content to sit down all day with a book that had gripped me with its brilliant characters and unique plot.

It's female protagonist, Jane, was witty, conflicted, and the kind of girl I instantly knew I'd be friends with in real life. Her love of science and quirky facts brought life to the story, making her more than just your average heroine. Her character development shocked me with its rapid but well-thought-out pace - she faced many challenges but emerged triumphant, wearing her emotional and physical scars proudly.

And the book's male protagonist was just as amazing...deadly amazing! Yes, yes, I was very tempted to include a whole array of death puns when discussing the hottie that is Anubis, but I will restrain myself ;)

The Rooper sisters' Anubis is by far one of the best adaptions of a mythological persona I have come across. Anubis was just the right blend of clueless, stoic, and self-righteous ancient god mixed with the adorableness, good looks and sly humour of a YA bad boy. The chemistry between him and Jane was off the charts! They helped each other grow and become better versions of themselves, challenged one another, and made great friends long before romance blossomed.

If you love comedy, romance, time-travelling, and mythology...Jane Unwrapped is definitely for you!

I cradled my drink as Cam sauntered back to the pool tables. My mind wasn’t made up on the whole visiting them thing yet. Maybe I would. Maybe I wouldn’t.

“Want another rum and coke?”              

My lips curled up at the sound of Nick’s rich, deep voice. We’d been chatting on and off since I plopped my butt down on the stool, and he had seemed happy that I was there.              

Total bonus points lottery with this guy. 

“I’m good, but thanks.” The last thing I wanted to be was drunk. I smiled at him, pleased when his heavily hooded gaze dipped again. “Are you guys usually this busy on the weekend?”              

I could see that small talk was something Nick excelled at, which made sense, considering his occupation. He was an equal opportunity charmer. Women flocked to him at the bar. The other bartender, the girl with the pink glasses, seemed to take it all in stride. 

“Not sure if you really call this busy, but Saturdays usually bring a larger crowd.” He glanced down the bar before continuing. “So you went to school with them?” he asked, jerking his chin in the direction Cam had roamed off to.  

“Yeah.” Leaning forward, I placed my elbows on the bar. “I had no idea they had connections here. Total surprise.”  

“Small world,” he said, echoing my earlier thought. “But you’re not very close with them.”  

It was a statement, not a question. “What makes you think that?”  

“Well, if you were, I guess you’d be over there with them. Or …”  

Nick was observant. “Or what?”             

One side of his lips curled up as he folded his arms across his chest. The movement drew my attention. I was such a visual creature. Not that anyone would blame me right now. The black shirt he wore stretched around well-defined biceps. “Or you’d rather spend the time with me.”              

The twisty motion in my belly cranked up a notch. “Am I that transparent?”              

“In the best possible way.” He picked up a bottle. “I’m glad you did stop by. Every time the door opened last night, I looked up and hoped it was you.”              

“Is that so?”              

“I speak the truth.” His smile was lazy. “Did you finish unpacking?”             

“Yep.”              

“Were there any more rat bastard combinations?”              

I laughed. “There were a few more.”              

“Kind of mad I missed out on them.”              

“There’s always later.” I toyed with my glass as I met and held his stare. “So, Nick, do you have a last name?”              

“Blanco,” he replied after a brief hesitation. “Do you?”              

“Keith.” I grinned as he unfolded those arms. “I have another question for you.”

Moving in, he placed his hands on the bar. “Ask away.”              

“Do you have a girlfriend?” My breath caught a little when he leaned in suddenly. Our mouths were close enough that we were breathing the same tiny patch of oxygen. “Or a boyfriend?”              

Nick didn’t bat an eyelash. “Nope to both. How about you?”              

Bonus points explosion! “None,” I said, welcoming the tingle that swirled down my spine as his breath warmed my lips.              

He tilted his head to the side, lining up his mouth with mine with just a fraction of an inch between us. I started to feel a little flushed. “You have plans tonight, Stephanie Keith?” he asked, voice deeper and rougher.              

I shook my head as my pulse tripped all over itself in a happy little dance.              

Nick’s grin spread into the kind of smile I knew left a trail of women in its wake. “You do now.”

Breaking Measures by Emma Raveling ~ Review

The same power pulsating in the thick blood now flowing across the pale wood and pooling around the podium. This sacred ground siphons away an artist's life, ingesting ambition and arrogance, and devouring countless dreams of immortality so that it can satiate a voracious audience.   

The stage demands to be fed.   

When you step on it, you become the willing sacrifice.'

Poignant and edgy, Breaking Measures takes contemporary fiction to the next level.

Emma Raveling's writing has always been a stunning example of how an author can reel in their readers from the very first word. And Breaking Measures is no exception. In fact, it builds on Raveling's ability to entertain readers by adding a bundle of mystery and suspense that will keep readers on the edge of their seat...and looking over their shoulders to check that a mass murderer hasn't snuck into their houses! 

Sprinkled with delicious descriptions of the main protagonist Leila Cates' music career and her love for her art, this novel is utterly captivating from start to finish. Examples of these beautifully crafted descriptions include:

'Leila retreated to the piano, hands trembling at the life spinning out of their control. She pushed the metronome, the precise tick reminding her of measures and boundaries.   

Now that Orion was gone, the frantic presto pulse no longer seemed right. She adjusted the speed, reducing it to an ominous adagio that boomed like thunder in her chest.'

And another one of my faves:

'People wanted to see her triumph over grief and become the bloodied gladiator standing alone in the arena. The stage demanded a moving display of grit and tenacity, a story about an inspiring comeback despite tragic suffering. 

Leila was now the headliner in a performance selling the American Dream. 

The only way to extinguish the sordidness of murder was with a spectacular performance that would be remembered for the ages, a concert that would become an immortal part of her legacy.'

This book is highly recommended for readers who love to read well-written books.
