Title: The Alchemists of Loom (Loom Saga #1)
Author: Elise Kova
Publisher: Keymaster Press
Release date: January 10th 2017
Genre(s): Adult (YA Crossover), High-Fantasy, Steampunk
Page(s): 380 pages
Synopsis: Her vengeance. His vision.
Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.
Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.
When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.
He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.

Booknut: The characters all have such intriguing names that seem to effortlessly fit them. What is your character naming process like?
Elise: When I was working on Air Awakens I didn’t really have a naming process and the names ended up being all over the board. For Loom, I wanted to improve as an author and therefore have a much clearer structure for how I arrived at names. So, from the start, I really sat down and made sure I knew what sort of sounds and structures I’d use to arrive at character names on Loom and on Nova and let that guide all names. I think it created a much more uniform experience and therefore more cohesive world building.
Booknut: Florence and Ari’s friendship bond is an important part of the book. What do you think draws two people who are so different together?
Elise: The main thing that I love about Florence and Arianna’s relationship was that, on the onset, neither of them wanted each other. Florence had emerged from the most difficult trial of her life to-date after losing all her friends in the Underground. Arianna was in much the same position, having lost everyone she loved. They needed each other at that time however. So their relationship was drawn together from needing each other without really knowing it.
Booknut: If Ari, Cvareh, Flor, & Leona each had their own theme song what would it be and why?
Elise: I love music questions because music is a big part of my writing. The following songs are all “character songs” for me. Meaning, I used them to get me in the mindset to write a specific POV because the tone and lyrics fit each of the characters.
(1) Arianna -- Transmission by ZEDD
(2) Cvareh -- Tear in My Heart by Twenty One Pilots
(3) Florence -- Needle by Ramin Djawadi
(4) Leona -- Trouble by Neon Jungle
Booknut: “It doesn’t matter who she was. It matters who she can become.” This quote from Chapter 13 highlights the importance of personal development. Which character do you think shows the most growth in TAoL?
Elise: I think Florence really grows a lot in THE ALCHEMISTS OF LOOM. She’s the youngest of the characters (sixteen at the start of the first book, though Fenthri age differently than humans) and still discovering herself, so, naturally, this leads to growth. I also think that she taps into a lot of unexpected potential throughout the book.
