As you may recall I've previously confessed how extremely slim my chance of surviving an actual apocalypse would be. Well TGGttA's main protagonist Verdell seems to have very similar odds stacked against her and is not your first choice for an apocalypse survivor or an actual contestant on Survivor.
But Verdell is determined to survive as she journeys deeper into a world of hidden dangers, new threats, and plenty of awkward conversations.

Book cover: The cover is channeling some major comic-book vibes so maybe Verdell is the next MARVEL superhero! The combination of the protagonist + building silhouettes in the foreground - and the neon explosion in the background - makes the cover an attention grabber for sure.
In other words...it's totally badass!
The grunge font also ties in with the apocalypse theme. Did I also mention how I love the addition of the coffee cup? Because I totally would hunt down the nearest Gloria Jeans or Starbucks if zombies attacked I mean a girl needs her caffeine!

Thoughts: Great chapter names are like gems. Every now and then you find a book that features ones that not only tickle the imagination but also tie in perfectly with the chapter's themes. TGGttA really impressed me with its chapter name choices, which were both descriptive and witty. A few of my favourites include:
East is Where the Sun Sets
Humanity is a Two-Way Street
No (Wo)Man is an Island
...and of course my all-time favouritebecause it is so true it hurts: Physical Fitness is More Than a School Elective.
But what makes this book so good is its overall message: that the best way to survive anything is to be equipped with the right attitude.
True, there are lots of more practical lessons to be learntlike rations, how to fight off cannibals and general health and safety but this one made the most impact on me. It's applicable to everything in life.
How can you expect to accomplish anything if you're expecting failure from the start? How can you be motivated if you have no goals, no reason to live and make it to the next day and the next?
In TGGttA we truly see our main protagonist thrive when she steps up and has faith in her own abilities and sets her priorities straight. One the key moments for her is when she says:

That's the kind of attitude we should all face life with. That maybe, just maybe, we will fail. But we've made it this far. And we believe we have something worth fighting for/living for/dreaming of. And just maybe, that's enough.

Great review! You and I can both mock our lack of any skills to survive the apocalypse haha! I like the sounds of this one though the humor and genre is a fun mix!
